“Why do you want to live?”

A question followed by another question stands at the beating heart of The Red Shoes. It’s an entirely rhetorical exchange, but it underscores the power and the mystery of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 masterpiece. For the respective speakers, a domineering impresario and a strong-willed ballerina, are talking about much more than dance. The real subject of their conversation, and of the film that contains it, is artistic dedication, even unto death.

JAYGO BLOOM has just finished work on a series of videos to accompany the FRANZ FERDINAND 2009 world tour. The videos have been specially created to be projected over a three projection array, covering an area over 70 feet wide and 20 feet high. Alongside the seriously awesome heavily graded color video montage, Jaygo created a trigger re-active visuals system for Paul Thomson’s drum kit running off ISADORA digital performance software.
PULSE FILMS duo ThirtyTwo also created part of the footage for this tour.

Following on from the success of our involvement with the AV Social Live at the Tate series. DECOLLAGE have produced an online blog documenting the works and artists featured, including the work O:.O:.O:.
Created in collaboration with the DANCEHOUSE Glasgow. NEWFUTURENOW Director JAYGO BLOOM and musician HAMMERSCHMIDT.

AV Social is an audio-visual event series, that places international audio-visual live acts and art into a public, social happening with food and spirits.

The latest event in November 2008 took place in the Tate Liverpool as a “Late At Tate” program and the night was really nice with very positive feedback from all sides. Besides the live AV acts, one part of every AV Social happening is a screening of short movies with a balanced relation between what you hear and what you see.

ZAPP YOURE PREGNANT
Now installed in Manchester Museum right above the Teradactyll display!

An interactive new media artwork by the artist JAYGO BLOOM
Interactive JAYGO AV exploring the subject of Childbirth and labor, documenting observations after an intensive eighteen months of visits, collaborations and discussions with Professor Jim Dornan of the Royal College of Obsteatricians, London.
After a successful premier at the Glasgow Science centre the BIRTHRITES exhibition is now installed within MANCHESTER MUSEUM and open to the public until December 2008.

...Bloom presents an audiovisual installation that combines the digital / technological intervention evident within the maternity ward, alongside a series of video narratives which have been created in response to the feelings and emotional responses of the expectant mothers he encountered whilst resident on the 24 hour ward.
There is a sense of entropic disorder within the visual imagery employed by Bloom, this combined with the use of alchemical and scientific motif, draws comparisons with the archaic notion of rebirth and transformation.
Through a process of paradoxical results, achieved by incompatible elements fluctuating between the digital and the physical, Bloom attempts to offer us an insight into the birthing process and the lucid emotional state of the expectant mothers within the ward.

After three weeks of Farmyard antics, roosting with the chicks on Gorgie CITYFARM and NEWFUTURENOW front man JAYGO BLOOM and colleague IAN CAMPBELL up to the eyeballs with chicken fried ideas, we are please to announce the WORLDWIDEWEGG is now online !! offline / realtime / peckline you name it! networks connecting a hen coop on a city farm with an art gallery in Glasgow,

The WORLDWIDEWEGG is an online website and low budget breakfast bar presented as part of the ALT-W awards showcase throughout the month of August at the CCA gallery. Glasgow. Visitors to the gallery expect web enabled appliances, peck controlled iTunes and random Lucky Clucky tickets online, all controlled by the daily habits of a bunch of hungry hens.

Each time an egg gets laid a signal is sent to the web enabled toaster (via pd and arduino technology) this sets the coils in motion and returns the action of egg laying to the gallery goers as hot toast for consumption! Not only that, on the breakfast table is a peck controlled iTunes soundsystem, each peck on the piezo mic' attached to the chicken feed bowl causes the 'Cock Rock Disco' playlist to skip forward a track - perpetual flutterings of chicken inspired songs!

Online the same egg laying response generates a single random number, after six numbers are generated / six eggs are laid a lottery ticket is purchased online, therefore returning back to its source a percentage of funds recieved for this project! and hopefully making its creators millionaires! genius eh?!

We at NEWFUTURENOW like it anyhow, the project utilises all the same sophisticated technology as other more respectable sophisticated projects, it pushes the uses of these networks to the limits, with realtime biological actions governed by an equally random factor (the chickens), its a project, its a happening, an event and most importantly at the end of all this it manifests itself as something so spectacularly simple and commonplace (a slice of toast), people would ask why ever bother at all!

ZAPP YOUR PREGNANT!
Latest in a series of interactive new media projects by the artist JAYGO BLOOM recently premiered at the GLASGOW SCIENCE CENTRE - New Futures Gallery.
This piece was specially commissioned by BIRTHRITES and is part of an exhibition open to the public until September 2008, after that it travels to MANCHESTER MUSEUM.

...Bloom presents an audiovisual installation that combines the digital / technological intervention evident within the maternity ward, alongside a series of video narratives which have been created in response to the feelings and emotional responses of the expectant mothers he encountered whilst resident on the 24 hour ward.
There is a sense of entropic disorder within the visual imagery employed by Bloom, this combined with the use of alchemical and scientific motif, draws comparisons with the archaic notion of rebirth and transformation.
Through a process of paradoxical results, achieved by incompatible elements fluctuating between the digital and the physical, Bloom attempts to offer us an insight into the birthing process and the lucid emotional state of the expectant mothers within the ward.

JAYGO BLOOM Has been commissioned to create yet another inspiring spin on the way the internet can help bring diverse and unusual elements together, this time in the for of the project THE WORLD WIDE WEGG
The project funded by SCOTTISH SCREEN and NEW MEDIA SCOTLAND will attempt to draw comparrisons upon natural interactions with that of new media networks by connecting Chickens from different parts of the globes with toasters from other parts of the globe. The event will present itself as a one day event in a local gallery / cafe and offer the chance to translate the laying of an egg into the poping up of a slice of toast in another country.
With this project jaygo Bloom is interested in utilising sophisticated networking devices to create a seemingly simple action, a labourous way of creating somthing simple as in the works of ........ the project is a development from past Futuresonic commission and will successfully utilise locative technology, translating an analogue action into a digital and back int analogue again - similar to the once sci fi notions of mike TV in willy wonkas chocolate factory - all this is possible now - yet the uncertain nature of the work being at the perils of an unegglaying eg layer is also a concern - not evidently to the Artist Jaygo Bloom - who beleives the project will be a success egg or not!
THE WORLD WIDE WEGG will be live during GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL in April 2008.
NEW FUTURE NOW will be overseeing the project and collaborating closely with cheeseboard architect and pile artist IAN CAMPBELLSTEIN who will be assisting in the development and progress of chicken - brain - technology and the successfull implantation of triggers sensors and diodes to get this thing up and running, incidently his hometown Montreal may just be one of the international nodes as well....

JAYGO BLOOM Has been commissioned to build an Online Games Consultation Tool as part of a major redevelopment project in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
The project is a collaboration between business partners RAPLOCH URC and the Visual Arts officer Cristina Armstrong of UZ EVENTS and informed within a larger landscape framework ensuring the projects success and sustainability by Architects and Consultants CRISTINA GONZALEZ LONGO and Keith Frazer
We managed to ask JAYGO BLOOM a little about this exciting project..
IMMEDIATE DEVELOPMENTS - After a series of new media based workshops with the local youths in their new community centre, the gameplan is now taking form.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES - I hope the game will encourage and inform the direction of ideas generated through play by the local community.
FUTURE - The game will be the first stage towards a very well integrated networked public art work which will be housed within the local landscape.

CURRENT 93 Invokes esoteric associations through the use of specific cipher code.

The concept behind CURRENT 93 is lifted directly from Hebrew gematria - The idea behind gematria is that through the conversion of words into numbers, the initiate discovers the revelation of esoteric associations of words of like number.

After a successful series of workshops hosted by the TRAMWAY art venue and overseen by Movement specialist and Choreographer BRIAN HARTLEY . NEWFUTURENOW has successfully completed the rough cut of a brand new video artwork entitled O:.O:.O:.

We managed to catch a few minutes with JAYGO BLOOM The Project Director and Co-Ordinator

Can you tell us a little about the project Jaygo?

O:.O:.O:. reexamines the theosophical beliefs behind early modernist art in relation to dance, film and sculpture, I am interested in how the body becomes a symbol for the illusory 'artistic' reality between geometric and organic planes within the art object.

Can you explain the modernist like structure that you have imposed upon the performers?

O:.O:.O:. Has developed out of a series of choreographed scenes based around a very strict metronomic time signature and an Alexander Calder composition. For this project I have been interested in adopting a similar approach in direction as that of early modernist painting, one which is restricted by palette, by time and with formula.

What does O:.O:.O:. stand for?

O:. O:. O:. is video invocation, it involves the use of prime denominators and is expressed through a combination of technique and procedure. It manifests itself as 3 dancers, 3 art objects and 3 locations - A black rehearsal space, A white gallery space and a greenscreen video production room. The title O:.O:.O:. makes reference to the pace, the content and the connection between Art , Magick and Science that early modrnist artists often seeked solace.

Images from my recent Solo show at the Intermedia Gallery. CCA Glasgow -
ROCK ELECTRONIQUE was presented to a score by Pierre Henry, one of the founders of musique concrete interested in the hybridization of ideas and technology, of investigations into used elements of synthesised sounds along with found sounds.

'Jerk Electronique' (1963) Extraction of the heavy bass, drum and song vocals from a rock score leaving an entirely synthesized sound accompanied new works which investigated the artistic strategy of appropriation mixed with reduction.

What has been left out becomes encapsulated within its structure, becoming part icon part metaphor.
Reduction from everything to everything
One sound, not sounds, one single sound everywhere, standardised.

MARRAKATTAK PRESENTATION TEXT

Marrakattak Is an 8bit Latino based Percussive Interface, an audiovisual games module created for performance at Pixelazo the new Colombian node of the Pixelache festival network. Pixelazo was formed to create encounters between indigenous communities and the western electronic art scene.

Marrakattak consists of a pair of modified maracas, which, when shaken drives the audio visual performance. Moving imagery taken from a selection of sampled video sources combines with a series of pulsating Mayan, Aztec and Zapotec ritual symbols and 8bit game sounds.

Marrakattak was created to engage with the stories and traditional imagery of Colombia, it combines the physical sensibility of an authentic pair of maracas, with an altogether different end result, deriving from electronic art culture and western 8bit game aesthetics.

My latest videowork 'Mirroball' was one of the selected works being shown and you can see it here.

MIRRORBALL online

This piece was premiered as a 3 channel monitor installation at the Intermedia Gallery space. The Centre for Contemporary Arts. Glasgow and is a re-master of one of my all time favourite film scenes - A psychedelic post-apocalyptic explosion scene from Michelangelo Antonioni's 1970 film 'Zabriskie Point'. For this re-edit I slowed down the selected footage and extracted the motion into its appropriate R.G.B. channels, an aesthetics reminiscent of the 1970's post processing video mixing board.

An afterword to all the fantastic people I met in Colombia, during the Pixelazo events, especially the people of Comuna13, Medellin.

Social and political regimes rained down on this region for many years and considerable atrocities and lives were lost during the heat. Now a place with extreme millitary presence, but at the heart a vibrant community, together they face a new future, a community full of promise, and with open arms towards our international crew 'POINTLESS CREATIONS'. In fact all pre-conceptions I had of Colombia were instantly crushed, True, its past has had quite a reputation the hostility, drug-rings, government corruption, guns, guerillas, death and danger but today in Medellin all seems safe, socialble and tranquillo.

Economical difficulties make it hard for people to consider all those creative practices that we are free to think about in Western culture, as for many they find it difficult just to get by, yet all the people i met were so 'turned on', they had a real thirst for new experience and throughout the workshops we held, they all seemed to be with us 100% of the way, share and exchange, like for like.

DJDAZX has two kids and he tries to be a dad but he also has this other part to him, the digital world, and he has a dream to live off making music and being artistic and being creative, but he has this worry he has this stress that he has to provide for his family, and finds it very hard to balance both.

DJDAZX knows that the time is changing, he is preparing for the right time, and his people also have an awareness for the right time, to be ready for that moment which is definatley coming and happening within Colombian subculture is what the many people we met live for.

DJDAZX gave me a letter just before we left, he had help by his english teacher -
The first two lines say it all -

'So glad I am of you to come to my country, because through this you help young people like me.
Not to hold a gun but to click a mix'.

A hazardous journey across the mid andes in a 4x4 passing all the various para military check points without a hitch, we finally arrive at our second destination PIXELAZO MEDELLIN.

Here we are to present our work and perform in around the various Communas, as part of the cultural exchange network - PIXELAZO

Pixelazo is the new Colombian node in the Pixelache festival network. Organised by Intermundos.org and in collaboration with Pixelache Helsinki a festival of electronic and digital arts which we performed at during April 2005.

Pixelazo has developed and become informed by the need for dialogue, encounters and collaborations between Westernized Cultures and the more developing cultures of the world. Using art and technology as its mode for communication and discovery.

This cultural exchange can be seen in divide -

South * North
‘Developing countries’ * ‘Developed countries’
Traditional culture * Western culture
Marginalized communities * International creative networks
Natural/Organic * Digital/Synthetic
Lo-tech * High-tech
Slow * Quick

So far a great deal of Latin America has been left out from the Western media art events and through the Pixelache / Intermundos exchane program it is intended that both communities gain valuable experience from one another.

The goals of Pixelazo are:

* To make possible exchanges between artists from the Southern and Northern hemisphere.
* To introduce electronic art and culture to populations that have not had an opportunity to come into contact with these forms of expression. Ex.; marginalized communities; rural population; indigenous communities.
* To promote multidisciplinary collaborations through involvement of scientists, media professionals, philosophers, indigenous people, writers etc.
* To introduce alternative spaces for working with and showing electronic art.
* To share and multiply knowledge through conferences, round table discussions and theoretical or practical workshops.
* To generate encounters that foster creativity and plural and multidimensional thought.

The Pixelazo schedule includes workshops, conferences and public events, These have been concentrated in one of the marginal neighborhoods of Medellin (comuna 13). The goal, to introduce the local audience to electronic art and the idea of open communication tools and technologies, and through this process Intermundos will be able to locate the urban artists living in Medellin and who are already working with new medias and interested in developing this global network and cultural exchange practice with western artists.

Pixelazo will run monthly events throughout the next few months with a final program to be scheduled for July and to take place at the SELVATORIUM JUNGLE LABORATORY - Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia

Bogotrax 2007 in Bogotá, Colombia // ‘Laboratorio Urbano’ //

The Pointless Creations crew travel again. This time myself Dava Bernard and Dan Norton will be Presenting a series of workshops on DIY screen construction and midi triggers for live digital performance as well as an extensive live set performance schedule, creating visuals for some very big acts on the international electronic music circuit.

Bogotrax is an alternative, independant festival, which as the name laboratario urbano suggests, becomes a place for artisitic and social experimentation. Bogota becomes the meeting place where artists from different cultures come together. Producers, Deejays, Veejays, Free software creators, digital live performers, graffitti artists, programmers and musicians freely share the exchange of information between themselves and the public. All events and parties are free to attend and are presented within different parts of the city each night ensuring even the most remote of communities are reached. This year Bogotrax's fourth year, there is a real focus on the interchange and exchange between art and the society. A celebration of all the diverse types of cultural and subcultural appropriation. For this laboratory. the city, immersed in the continuous transformation that the technologies impose on society, is the point of beginning. The music and the arts bringing people together, enabling participants to traverse new ideas in a more global context.

As one of the Bogotrax founders explained to me - 'An urban laboratory is the way and the place in which we experience elements both of human and technological networks that escape any precise definition'.

New Media Scotland are doing one of their notorious Poker Club events on Thursday November 23rd from 6pm until 9pm, in the Grassmarket. Edinburgh. Decide to go to London with Becky, Glasgow's LOWSALT gallery co-director. Dinner at Hoxton square, see the sculpture by Damien Hirst in the middle of it, was never a big fan (always liked his restaurants the best) do like this, it's night so we can't see the actual White Cube show. Try to get pudding at Les Trois Garçons but fail, rice pudding from The Best Kebab Shop in London on Stoke Newington High Street instead. Past the inflated Paul McCarthy sculpture to see the stunning Olafur Eliasson installation that opened that week. More Tate Modern, a rather large photo installation by Zoe Leonard.
Next day at the Freeze Art Fair. I'm glad it is happening. Suprised that none of the Dutch galleries have a stand there. Impressed with the Milan stand. It's not opening night and its massive I need at least five hours to take it all in, still we meet the New York dealer Chris D'Amelio, Cokkie Snoei who is with a collector. Talk to Sadie Coles. We see another Zoe Leonard picture A bearded lady? in a bathtub. Lovely Collier Schorr pictures. Gary Rhodes fantastic synthetic sculptures. The Modern Institutes consists of an abashment of black astroid blocks which scatter the central forecourt. Modern British bangers and mash for lunch followed by a walk at the zoo.

I have just cleared out my latest series of interactive projects from the MSc group show and come to the realisation that the systems I create need to change, I need something more practical and inexpensive, i feel the limits on both sides, Video is like the final frontier with open source software It needs a fast speed computer and i use a lot of it (video). Other than that I feel limited to presenting my works within institutes that can facilitate what i need, and that means presenting in a predominantly western world. If I am to keep on using systems that depend upon expensive technologies and high spec computer systems, I will ensure to address concerns that tackle social concerns, welfare, diversity and education and all the other really important objectives that will facilitate bridging the gap between those that have the technology and educational system to support this creativity and those that don't.

Consider this if you will..

Are locative media and psychogeography projects just entertainment for white, middle-class, gadget-oriented consumers? Mapping impulses, locative media projects and psychogeographic investigations of place and community have proliferated over the past decade. There is a rich, interdisciplinary field of practice and new strategies, tactics and tools are being invented all the time. However, there is also the need for critical evaluation and discussion of the relevance and impact of these cultural projects. Factors of race and class are often overlooked. Connections to the material (often military and corporate) circumstances of the development of technologies deployed in these projects are often swept aside. It is clear that more participation and play does not mean more democracy and freedom.

I recently stumbled across an old project I had forgot all about. In 2004 I utilised the changes of pitch and frequency within the human voice to create varying colors of field within a projected sphere of light. This I recall came about through my interest with the work of Nam June Paik, most specifically his first interactive TV piece which enabled a viewer, by talking into a microphone to manipulate the play of electrostatic images upon the Television screen.
Such basic interactive works still hold context within my recent practice. In TAO JOYSTICK I use a similar frequency level watcher to exchange the play of sounds into more complex audio and visual composition, attaching to the varied frequencies - position, tempo, and duration of any externally synched video footage.

The project processes a sound file submitted by the user through an unused tank of 11 x 7 of reinforced concrete built in 1032 at the central station in Obenhauser (Germany.) By installing a linux server, some audio software, microphones and speakers right inside the tank, Tank-FX allows you to upload up to 60 seconds of audio material. It is played immediately in the water tank. The surface of the tank causes a particular reverberation which is picked up by the stereo mics. The reverberated version is recorded and mixed with the original one at a radio set that you can set in advance. The outcome is then converted in the desired output format for you to download and use.

This is a follow up to my fascination with horns and acoustic amplifiers, which have been a strong influence in
my designing of works such as the recently commisioned foghorns for the Futuresonic festival. Manchester.
and Acorn Electronics exhibited in Glasgow International 2005.

Artist Matt Hope has created HornMassive, a 2-ton, 2000-watt steel and aluminum horn sound system on wheels.
As far as I can tell it's mostly been used at a few raves but hopefully a mutual friend can introduce him to the guys from Konono No 1 at some point.

This massive horn reminded me instantly of the wonderful pictures of Japanese War Tubas and various acoustic location devices
used during WWI and WWII to detect the noise of distant enemy planes approaching. In England, the preferred devices for this sort of
enterprise were concrete sound mirrors which dotted the UK's southern coast and many of which are still standing today.

A few years back, Danish artist Lise Autogena embarked on a new project to create a pair of contemporary sound mirrors
that will allow people across the English channel to converse with each other, an especially ambitious (and seemingly impossible)
goal considering that Matt Hope's 2000 watt device is touted as being able to be heard 1 kilometer away.

"I love the fact that it's such an awkward, failed technology, which hasn't been covered up... New acoustic technology in America
can isolate sounds. So when you stand at a certain point in the mirror, you'll be able to hear the voice of the person standing by the mirror in France -
but only at an exact spot in the mirror. Move just a centimetre and the sound will disappear."

Commissioned by the Lancaster, UK, arts organization Folly, BUMP's website evokes nostalgia for the era of Pac-Man and Zaxxon. It even captures some of the initial euphoria of the early internet by tracing optimistic intentions to use the net as a force for true global connectivity. The Interactive Bump screen.

The project worked on numerous levels - from the free distribution of earplugs
within many of Futuresonics evening performances, to the installed pre fabricated
sound units visibly present around the festival. By far the best location was on
Oldham Street above the shop front of Bambers Art Space ran by Mark Kennedy.
And the end of the project the global web counter read +13000 hits, thats potentially
over 13000 sonic sounds emitted throughout the festival over the three days!
a great success, that will be once again exhibited at F.City in Lancaster this September.

Circuit bending with colleague Matt Kane Green at the Stills Gallery open day in Edinburgh, demonstrating different
hardware hacking techniques and how to interface circuit bent instruments with computers and micro controllers.
Participants are able to have a computer control the sound of their chosen instrument interface and be able to use
their instrument with midi sequencers and games controllers via max/msp to make music. This workshop is easy to
understand, for greater involvement the user does require some computer knowledge. Also explained was how the
same skills could be used to generate and control video pieces, as seen in the works 'TAO JOYSTICK' and 'MARRAKATTAK'.

Plants that generate their own wind...

machineARIA invites the viewer to contemplate a hybrid ecosystem
natural and artificial of electromechanically modified plants. The
augmented plants contain the source of the wind that sways and caresses
them.

A custom circuit with a PIC microcontroller is connected to five
motors with their propellers and LEDs, each one grafted to the trunk of
a bamboo plant. The motors and LEDs are being turned on and off
sequentially: the resulting motion simulates a delicate wind blow.

Just got back from FACT the foundation for creative technology, situated in the heart of buzzing Liverpool! Aside from scouting around the city centre distracted at wanting to form a band and checking out the many KARAOKE bars that seemed to be alive with the sound of tone deaf scousers, I did in fact have an objective. I was to participate in a fantastic masterclass run by the Troika Ranch dance group. Dawn and Marc the companies directors had flown in from Canada especially for the showcase and we received excellent firsthand experience in the uses and application of ISADORA, their unique physical computing software / tool that enables its user to shift activity away from the desktop and into a more organic form. Expect some examples soon and if you can check out one of their performances.

- How I lost two cell phones in one week.

The Internet was supposed to bring us all together. Just ten years ago, the world was awash in bold predictions: The Web would obliterate race, gender and nationality. It would break down social barriers. It would usher in a new era of classless communication and interpersonal understanding.

well then? what happened?

"The Net is still a confused social space," says Andrew Shoben, founder of British artist collective Greyworld "and for most of us, it's still a very private experience."

In the meantime, however, diverse artists and engineers have been hard at work implementing networked technology into real world form and function. Incorporating the use of cell phones, GPS Systems, Stamp Technology. C++ with more mundane everyday objects. These artists seek to subvert technology and embed it into a more physical future.

'What can I do other than sit you in front of a computer and show you art?' - Where does it begin? How can I translate the actions and feelings of 'connectivity' associated with the world wide web, into real space, out on the street, in my own backyard?

What starts off as a disruption of the everyday with creative pranks, or simply the investigation of meaning in messages from nowhere. Usually results in interesting and unexpected outcomes.

Take the artist Thorsten Knaub, his latest project GPSdiary is an online archive in which the artist recorded his daily movements over the course of a year by carrying a Global Positioning System(GPS) receiver on him.

To get technical for a minute -
GPS utilises special satellites in the earths’ orbit to record the change of a tracked position on the surface of the earth. Therefore any kind of movement will be charted according to the latitude and longitude grid system, e.g. a walk to the local shop results in a small 'drawing', a day spent at home will be recorded as a dot only but a journey on the London Underground results in a straight line between the tube station where he is out of range of the GPS satellites.

Check his site out, it's a fascinating linear pictograph of the artists day to day movements.

Ironically, lost within this ever expanding multiverse of rapidly increasing networks are two mobiles belonging to JAYGOBLOOM Two phones in as many weeks! it's a bit of a pain but hey, I am enjoying the thought of being constantly engaged.

Pong returns!!. A year has passed since I created this seminal videopiece and now what at first started out as a joke has become an everyday obsession! Festivals and events are very fond of it, fortunately this provides me with the occasional opportunity to visit alternative media spaces throughout Europe and meet other far more interesting makers

Next on its list is the Computergame Museum of Berlin. They are planning on including it within their exhibition PONG:Mythos The show that tells the story of Pong by spanning a bridge from the area of game history over game/pong art and through to science.

I owe this break to a whizzkid low tech enthusiast who goes by the name of CyberNIKLAS
Check out his Pongmechanik a fantastic remake of the analogue game converted into wires pullys and levers!

During my stay in Liverpool I happened to meet Josh Nimoy through mutual connections at FACT The Foundation for Arts and Creative Technology. His work balldroppings has been chosen for the show too. Its so addictive, likewise are his interestingly addictive workshops and seminars.

Connectivity -
Work that gives me that same feeling of 'connectedness' as I get through surfing the internet, yet through a completely physical act.
I guess this is similar to the butterfly concept or like making waves in the bottom of a teacup.

Recently arrived back in the UK after a successful week of max/msp programming and general audio visual mayhem Oslo Style. 'Making Sense' was a week long project hosted by Peter Votava AKA DJ PURE and Erich Berger. I was part of a group of artists and musicians who had travelled from as far as Paris, Canada, Austria, Berlin and beyond to participate in the event.
Each artist had arrived with the intention to solve at least some of their intended project, ranging in content from a web activated dildo by audio acoustic duo Decker and Reiter, to an alcohol breathaliser kit / sound manipulator from pile artist

Everyday was spent in the muted grey windowless confines of ATELIER NORD sliding around in our socks whilst the minus eight degrees and blue skies saturated Oslo with health given ions. Each night with a numb head from too much on screen activity we checked out the nightlife. Our first stop for a drink at spasibar. where DJ Pure, Erich Berger, Decker and Reiter presented some live audiovisual manipulation.

This was enough to put a halt to the that disco loving friday feeling and left some of the locals with their fingers in their ears, especially to the nosebleeding shell sounds coming from Erich, who'd of thought it? too look at Erich appears quite a nice man really.

One more night out amongst similarly pleasant looking folk at an independantly run artschool that turned out to be infact a Death Metal Rocker Festival, had me ducking and diving from the pints of gozz the flying bottles and dead animals, under the pretense that there was going to be some interesting electronic wifi-beatery and visuals. Bands with names like 'the Darkside of the Force' 'Lydia laska' and 'Diary of a lustful Turkey' continued to insult the crowd, who apparently just couldn't get enough.

Went to a few art openings, all the work is pretty messed up, its no wonder really what with all that death rock.

Bluring the Boundary Between Gaming and Reality

"At the same time as people are diving into game worlds, the games are starting to invade the real world. You're moving through the streets of Melbourne stalking your quarry. A phone call on your GPS mobile phone tells you your target is only a few streets away. A direct kill means boosting your team's score. And in this game, winning is everything. Welcome to the world of "real-life" games that blur the boundary between gaming and reality.

Last year the classic arcade game Pacman came to life on the streets of New York. A player dressed as Pacman ran around Manhattan collecting virtual "dots" while trying to evade four players dressed as ghosts. Each player had a human controller back at base who monitored their progress online and phoned through strategy and advice.

A few months later, a lab at Singapore National University had developed a version of the same game using GPS and motion sensors to track players through the city's streets. Cuckoo IP is a voice messaging system. The clock's answer phone can be dialled from mobile or landline. Leave a voice message, select a time for the delivery of it. At that time, the cuckoo will emerge from the clock and broadcast your message.

The device uses networking protocols to communicate with a server. Every minute, the clock asks the server if there's any message for that time-slot and request the sound file.

Check out this work by Erik Sandelin & Magnus Torstensson of unsworn, whom I met whilst participating in the Pixelache Festival last April. they have created what they call a Breather. A solar-powered electronic devicemade from a solar panel, a small circuit, and a speaker. When put into a container and attached to a south-facing wall, it converts solar light into chirping sounds.

Breathers is part of a Desearch and Revelopement programme - that recontextualises technological progress into meaningful artefacts through workshops and interventions on the theme of recycling, reappropriation and de[con]struction, the Breathers project imagines that in the future not only the radio frequencies but also the spectrum of visible light will be available for licensing by private companies.

The Breathers are some kind of sonic grafitti that could be used by free-spectrum activists. By subtly parasiting the private frequencies of the solar spectrum - thus subverting the business model of solar filtering companies - the Breathers articulate a resistance of the commodification of the energy spectrum.

Finger Whisper, a wristwatch-phone that transfers voice signals via
your body:

becoming a human circuit—with electrical signals coursing through one’s
body from fingertip to fingertip—is so fascinating that visitors

technology as the ultimate wireless networking tool. A string of
Japanese companies are experimenting with systems that use the human

Random Screen is a mechanical thermo dynamic display which does not
rely on any electricity.

Each of the 12 by 12 cm pixels is built as a seperate module. A tee
candle lights and controls each pixel. The rising heat of the candle
turns a modified beer can which turns the pixel on and off. Each pixel
has its own frequence. The more bright a candle shines the faster is
the rotaion of the can.

SoundTransit is a collaborative, online community dedicated to field
recording and phonography. On this site, you can plan a sonic journey
through various locations recorded around the world, or you can search
the database for specific sounds by different artists from certain
places. If you are a phonographer, you can also contribute your
recordings for others to enjoy. The Creative Commons Attribution
license encourages the sharing and reuse of all sounds on this website.

Phonography is the art of recording sounds from the environment around
us, with an emphasis on the unintentional sounds which often go
unnoticed in our daily lives.

On the "Book" page, users can create a SoundTransit by choosing a
location of departure and arrival, as well as several stopovers along
the way. Based on your selections, an intinerary with details about the

The idea of making art with living systems is not new; you might even
consider a garden or a goldfish pond to be biological art. What is new
is the degree of control over biological systems and materials
contemporary technology offers us. Topics on the organism weblog

We are standing on the brink of a new ubiquitous computing and
communication era, one that will radically transform our corporate,
community, and personal spheres. Over a decade ago, the late Mark
Weiser developed a seminal vision of future technological ubiquity, one
in which the increasing “availability” of processing power would be
accompanied by its decreasing “visibility”.
As he observed, “the most profound technologies are those that disappear…
they weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are
indistinguishable from it”.

Early forms of ubiquitous information and communication networks
are evident in the widespread use of mobile phones: the number of
mobile phones worldwide surpassed 2 billion in mid-2005. These little
gadgets have become an integral and intimate part of everyday life for

computer history, the entertainment industry, science and art; research
projects that use Pong as an experimental playing field for future human
computer interfaces are presented along with historical game consoles
and a Pong game for the blind.

[THE MYTH]
In 1972, when Nolan Bushnell founded Atari, the first video game
company, to manufacture the Pong game console, he was hardly conscious
of the historical dimension of this act. The emerging digital games also
marked the beginning of the digitization of daily life. Computer games
were the first applications with which many humans learned computer
engineering. In this sense, Pong, apart from its meaning for computer
games history, has a significant social value. The success of Pong
stands - in the sense of concrete and transferred history - in direct
connection with the development of our digital information society.

pong.mythos is a cooperation between the Computer Games Museum in
Berlin, the Württemberg Art Association, The Games Convention/Messe,
Leipzig, Kornhausforum, Bern and other partners.

Big show extravaganza with fire works, a seven foot gorilla and stretch limosines.
Situated right outside of the futuristic Glasgow science centre building.
'Govanwood' was a celebratory night of community film screenings. As part
of the Glasgow based AV team pointless creations I created a huge blue screen
out of a hired Luton van for realtime composition and manipulation.

Two days of max msp with whizz kidd guru Matt Green within
the Isis Arts centre, Newcastle upon Tyne.
During which I successfully reworked my project 'TAO JOYSTICK'
and it is now available as a fully playable version.
The system uses a G4 laptop running max/msp, attached to an old Atari2700 games console
via audio output and two seperate monitors for viewing.
I am now just getting busy with the content and should have some interesting
pictures to show you soon.

'Get a room' is an annual charity event hosted by the
Brunswick Hotel in Glasgow's merchant city centre.
For one night only the hotel is taken over by artists,
musicians and performers and all the proceeds collected
go to charity. I was approached with the opportunity to do
something interactive with one of the rooms, so decided, due to
the nature of the long corridors within hotels that i would enclose
the room with a screen and have an interactive pacman piece,
that would be simply triggered each time someone walked past the
screen. this worked really well, As the party revellers got haywire with
the free drinks and stunning bands performing in the penthouse suite.
those loving munching sounds of Pacman resonated along the walls.

Pointless Creations on tour.The first one of 2006 took us into Croatia and
to a beautiful old town called Rijeka. Our part in the festivities was to create
an AV performance and interactive space within the carnivalparty streets.
The town had the most amazing perspex domed phone booths, and I was
quick to appropriate this into a diy interactive video booth station from which I
operated my computer.

Croatia has an amazing culture the people have had quite a history to deal with
but most recently everything is on the up and everybody we met were happy and
accomodating. As is so often the case when we travel to such countries and feel the
warmth and genuine hospitality of such a nation,
I return from these trips always with mixed feelings as to our situation in the UK.

Soda Magazine is an international arts magazine, based in Switzerland They recently published
some of my images and an article within the Asia/Alias issue.

Heres a small exerpt from my included text.

My studio is large and cold, it has little natural light, this is where all my ideas are put to the test,
in a space devoid of all colour, with the dust hanging gently and the sound of someone using the oxytetraline torch next door.
Outside and on my bike I pass by roads I have never even been down. On my way to pick something up, drop something off or get to a meeting on time. The sounds I hear from my Walkman and the pace of movement at times blend into one, climatic changes or the sudden unexpected motion of a similar activity can bring this about. At times this is great enough to trigger off new ideas, of which I cultivate, sometimes I believe these visitations only appear whilst I rush and my head is full of distractions.

Montevideo is a new media organisation situated in the Netherlands.
They have a residency program 'AIR' for artists.
This year one of the main guidlines is that the project should
utilise and be created out of Open Source Software (OSS).
This type of technology makes alot of sense. Most software has an OSS alternative,
at the moment the key problem is awareness and profile.
Within our society many people are too used to spending vast amounts of money,
certain companies and even creative individuals still suspect anything that is good can be for free!
OSS software developers are now making efforts to educate community projects
and schools, where access to this would make real sense.

For the AIR program, I have proposed my 'TAO JOYSTICK' project and reworked it to fit into the guidlines,
with a new title - 'FREE CREDIT' I will work on this project within the OPENLAB sessions at Glasgow school of Art.
A regular meeting place for artists and programmers interested in the uses of such software.
I have also proposed to use the residency as an opportunity to
rework and remix selected videoworks from the Montevideo archive library, via the FREE CREDIT
games console, this will form part performance and part interactive installation.

Just heard positive word from fellow performance space
audiovisual pioneers Troika Ranch. They will be holding a two week
workshop in New york this summer and hopefull I will be able to attend.

The workshop is specific to physical computing software -
Isadora. I have used this for a number of projects, it has a real ease of use
and is very useful as an interface between technology and the real world.
Used within dance performance and installation art environments.
I have presented this to students at Glasgow school of Art and at Duncan of
Jordanstone college of Art, and I hope atending this course will enable me with extra skills
and the potential for delivering a much higher quality of workshop within the future.

I have just been successful with a proposal towards
a futuresonic festival commision, hosted by Lancaster
arts base - FOLLY.
FUTURESONIC is an annual festival of sound, and AV installation,
held in Manchester. UK. Its very high profile, and I am really
excited at being given the commision to create a new piece of work for it.

My project is called BUMP..
and basically its an online project that translates the press of a
key into an actual realtime event.

This adjective is appropriated from the endless realms of online forums where a user awaits a reply to his message.

Bump...

Situated within public walk spaces and areas of intersection between the many futuresonic festival events and interacted with on one of the many touch screen interfaces. < bump.. > will make it possible for participants to send a variety of sonic booms in real-time to one of the chosen hotspots.

Hotspots will be monitored by the use of live video stream via webcam and presented upon the Touchscreen interface.

TOUCHSCREEN INTERFACE
The interaction and execution of a sound-byte via an online flash based games module.

< bump… > involves a button-press online creating an actual real-time event within any specified location.
This is made possible via networked sockets and a flash signal being sent to a particular IP address port. max/msp receives this signal and changes it into

IN CONTEXT

As computer technology becomes increasingly mature, the technology itself will fade into the background of human activities, becoming far less intrusive than is the case today.

Will reinstate the presence of this technological intervention over it's environment via the quick shot, rapid-fire, 8bit sounds emanating out of its location based < FOLLY > sound modules.

Recontres Internationales want my new work TAO JOYSTICK
for inclusion into their 2006 schedule.
heres a few pictures before the new website goes online...

And part of the statement that goes along with the project -

Tao Joystick is an interactive audiovisual games enhancement. It works in unison with any games console and translates audible gameplay expressions into random sound and video composition with realtime manipulation.

Each system consists of a gaming environment / installation including two monitors, a laptop running the required software and a games console.

Tao Joystick references the playing of original 80’s arcade games and consoles -
< ATARI > < SPECTRUM > < COMMODORE 64 >
< BREAK-OUT > < PONG > < DIG DUG > etc.

The constraints of such games with their limited controls and set specific values are replaced with alternative values of < speed > < loop setting > etc.
At present this is created via < JITTER > programming.

Within the constructed games environment. The playing of Tao Joystick re-defines the archived video footage that is presented on its double screen monitor. Video has been extracted from many sources including – Inuit Song, Butoh Dance, Bangrha and Tibetan chant.
Content is chosen according to the practice of Tao Joystick as a vehicle to re-present and preserve the musical, oral and dance culture of marginalised traditions, within a new technologically mediated context.

As practitioners seek to embed new technologies within the environment and create ever increasingly, more sophisticated < ubiquitous > and transparent interfaces for us to explore. Interactivity and usability can become secondary to the mediated experience and any aspect of intended game playing is difficult to understand.
Tao Joystick seeks to reverse this need for < ubiquity > and looks first and foremost towards < playability > and
< what makes a game addictive? >.
The technology that presents Tao Joystick is central to its physical makeup. The controller and console is very evidently a games controller and games console, yet the intended outcome, mediated by these self same new technologies, create an altogether unique and memorable audiovisual experience.

A week of sunshine and Capoeira, with the ACAMCAB capoeira festival in Bordeaux.
with my favourite Mestre's, Mestres Cameleao (Marseille) Mestre Claudio (Salvador)
and Mestre Perna Longa (NY)And others, including
my very own inspirational teacher from Scotland 'Dion Draga'
who's capoeira name literally means 'the joker'- Da Ali G of the Capoeira world.

Capoeira is the most fascinating combination of music and dance.
The rhythms and the energy of the group are so important,
it is an all social affair with the crowd encouraging the play between two individuals,
through song and music. For the week we practice and perform for the public within
the many beautiful squares around Bordeaux town centre
And through the night we play and dance the big band samba. The traditional Maracatu EscÃ´cia
and muito samba enredos to perfection.
with Caphrinias and traditional food accompaniment!
Entertainment and play, song and dance, with the many fine people who had gathered
from around the world.

Mind, Body and spirit food - I recommend :)

Ars Virtua are asking for proposals towards their next event 'TRANSPOSITION'

"TRANSPOSITION"

In this age of increasing data collection, storage, and management, it becomes necessary to create new visual forms for the representation of such information. Ars Virtua New Media Center and Gallery, located in Second Life, is seeking information design projects of any medium to feature in our show entitled "Transposition" on June 30th.

Pieces should contain unique techniques and methods in presenting information, interaction design, communication design, data visualization, or emergent behavior. Projects that extend their abilities to interactivity within the Second Life environment are highly encouraged to apply.

ABOUT:
Ars Virtua is a new type of space that leverages the tension between the 3d rendered game space and the real. It is the first in a series of projects that explore the virtual as the new real.

I am hoping that my 'TAO JOYSTICK' project will be of interest to them

On a recent walk through town I came across this old man writing with water along the roadside.
It left an impression on me...

What trace is left by what we communicate?
Who experiences these traces of our communication?
How is our communication interperated?
Can something be equally 'invisible' and 'visible' at the sametime?
'Certain' and 'uncertain'?
What happens when multiple traces of past activity collide with one another?
How can this be presented as a digital performance / installation?
Of what significance does this visible trace hold over our relationship within the present?

VENN FESTIVAL

Back from an excellent gig in Bristol, performing as part of VJ collective Pointless Creations
Throughout the weekend VENN festival Set in the Stokes Croft quarter of Bristol but spilling into special venues throughout the city, featured bespoke line-ups, free events, processions, radio sessions, workshops, Digital performance and live art installation.

I also met with Teresa Dillon. Teresa is a Performance artist and Director for Polar Produce
Polar Produce are an Arts collective who use new technologies and digital media within live art performance. We spent a good day at the Venn Festival free picnic, discussing a new media collaboration involving traditional concepts from Butoh Dance, and a dynamic multi-camera system used to track the minute traces of movement within a performance.

Just back from a really productive session with Mark Daniels
Programs Manager for Folly Lancaster and Drew Hamment Director
of the Futuresonic Festival. Manchester. My Bump commission is
moving along really well, and I have now secured locations for the networked
modules within Music and Arts Venue Oklahoma, within the museum of Science
and Industry and within Futuresonics Headquarters at the Bamber
Art Space on Oldham Street. Folly has also negotiated a giant touchscreen window
display to present the work for public interaction, via digital communications group
pixel inspiration.
Now the context from which I am to present has been set in place, I am looking forward
to designing the online and onsite installation. Images to follow...

BLAST DIGITAL

A recent meeting with the BBC Digital Blast co-ordinator for Scotland, Kirstie Lamont, has given rise to a really exciting opportunity to get involved with a nationwide educational / digital event.
Digital Blast is a creative forum that aims to inspire and motivate young people to develop their creative talents and showcase their work on a range of digital platforms.
Digital Blast is looking into creating a series of activities From August onwards targeting young people within Scotland and geared around new digital media and the performing arts. I have proposed to come on board and asisst with the digital performance via new Digital media tool Isadora.
The project sounds really exciting and will travel the country within the The Blast Truck, providing workshops, taster sessions, surgeries, showcase opportunities and large scale events that celebrate young people’s creativity. The truck will be equipped with state of the art technology and will profile work created by young people across BBC platforms including live web-casts on Blast local and national websites, links with BBC local radio and regional TV, BBC Big Screens, downloads to mobiles and bluetooth technology and national showcases on Blast on BBC2.
Their target is to be on the road for 15 weeks in 2006 (working with 20,000 13 – 19 year olds) and 30 weeks each following year (50,000 young people per year). Approx 150 young people a day will actively participate in truck activities on board.
