Zapp You're Pregnant

Art & Design / Installation

Zapp You’re Pregnant is a series of interactive, video-mapped short film narratives examining the politics, practice, and technological mediation of childbirth. The installation forms part of the permanent art collection 'Birthrites' at King’s College London, the first international collection dedicated to contemporary artwork about birth.

Over six weeks in collaboration with Dr. Jim Dornan, Senior Vice President of the Royal College of Gynecology, we studied how technology shapes the experience of labour and delivery. How the rhythm of a heartbeat can sync with a monitor, how a contraction becomes data. Reimagining childbirth as both clinical and cosmic, video-mapped, looping and activated by a game controller. The resulting work presents childbirth as a state suspended between control and surrender, a technologically driven yet profoundly transformative process.

Drawing on alchemical and scientific symbolism, and a visual account of the collective, fervent imaginations of expectant mothers from within the hospital ward, this is a story about creation, technology, and the thin, glowing line between fear and wonder.
